The Kerala High Court has allowed the state government to make use of the land belonging to its "Vidya Vardhaka" office in order to build an upscale shopping mall in Kozhikode city. The proposal has not obtained the consent of all who are living near the site, according to reports. Those who will be affected by the proposal to build an upscale shopping mall in Kozhikode city, have come out strongly against the proposal.They feel that the proposal made by the state authorities is totally unjustified.The land in question is either housing "Vidya Vardhaka" office, or has been converted into government accommodation for its employees.Even though eight years ago, when the proposal was first floated, it had met with opposition from local residents, no heed was paid to their views then. The proposal has now met with stiff opposition from people who own property near the proposed site. It may be mentioned here that the exact location of the proposed mall is at Melethad junction, on the road leading from Kozhikode railway station to Calicut Medical College. The area at present houses the government offices of Vocational Education and Aids Control units, besides a number of houses belonging to local residents. The proposal to construct an upscale shopping mall had met with stiff opposition from those who live near the site, as also from some quarters in Calicut city. The matter had come before the High Court for resolution following an application filed by the state government. The state government had said that it was not possible to obtain approval for construction of a mall in non-residential area. The Kerala High Court has given its nod to the state government plan to build an upscale shopping mall in Kozhikode city. The decision was taken on an appeal filed by the state government, stating that it could not get clearances from all those who would be affected by construction of a mall. The state government had said that the land in question falls either in the jurisdiction of its "Vidya Vardhaka" office, or is converted into government accommodation for its employees. The court, which has earlier favoured the project, has however refused to defer construction of a mall under the condition that the state government gets clearance from all those who would be affected by it.
